Bravo Hopes To Heal The Loss Of Runway With Replacement Fashion Show
I have no problem admitting that I love the Bravo network. I don't believe that any other network could make a show about cooking or fashion design so darn addicting. These days, Bravo is filled to the brim with an abundance of reality shows such as "Top Chef", "The Real Housewives" (and its many installments), "NYC Prep", "Miami Social", et al…there's pretty much something for everyone. However, one show is sorely missing, and it's the one that put Bravo on the reality show map – "Project Runway." When "Runway" initially premiered on the Bravo Network on December 1, 2004, the network had only one hit to its name – "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy", which had premiered the year before. "Runway" was a critical hit, but the show that followed a group of fashion designers in New York as they fought to have their designs shown at Fashion Week was not exactly being seen by many viewers.
As the season went on, its popularity grew, and by the time the finale aired, "Runway" had become a sleeper hit. I, like most people, started watching around the last two episodes of the first season, and I soon realized what I was missing. Season 2 was greatly anticipated (both my roommate and I were hooked), and it premiered a year later in December 2005 to great ratings. From that point on it was quite clear that Bravo had a massive hit on its hands, and they began milking "Runway" for all they could. Elimination shows in the same vein as "Runway", such as "Top Chef," "Top Design," "Shear Genius," and "Step It Up and Dance" followed suit, and Bravo soon became known as the Watch What Happens network. Much like MTV and VH1, the network realized its cash cow was reality tv.
They switched from covering performing arts, drama, and indie films and started focusing on pop culture and fashion instead. However, Bravo had the carpet yanked out from under them in 2008 when the show's producers, the Weinstein Company, announced they had sold the show to Lifetime for a five-year deal starting with Season 6. In response, Bravo's parent NBC Universal filed a lawsuit against the Weinstein Company for violating its contract rights. In April 1, 2009, the lawsuit between Weinstein Co. and NBC Universal was settled, with Weinstein agreeing to pay NBC an undisclosed sum for the right to move the show to Lifetime. Season 6 had already been filmed, and will finally premiere on Lifetime on August 23. So now with their trademark show gone, what is Bravo to do next? Well, simply put, clone the show as best they can. Premiering in September will be Bravo's next foray into the reality tv shark tank "Launch My Line."
The newest fashion creative competition series, "Line" will feature 10 already established designers who are paired with 10 industry professionals. The innovators will work with the established designers to bring their vision to life and creative a fashion line. Only one team will win in the end, and from then their clothing line will be launched to the public. Twin brother designers Dean and Dan Caten of DSQUARED2 will serve as hosts, and fashion notables Stefani Greenfield and Lisa Kline serve as judges. Personally, while this might be interesting, I don't think it will be as enjoyable as "Project Runway." There's something lost when you try to recreate the magic of an original, and as they say, lightning never strikes the same spot twice. They tried another replacement several months ago with "The Fashion Show", which again focused on designers competing against each other with restricted time, materials, and resources. Nothing so far has measured up to the titan that is "Project Runway", however, I do have to commend Bravo for trying. They know what works and what their viewers crave (the biggest part of their audience being women and gay men), and they cater to that audience with shows about fashion, celebrities, and catty drama.
