Alaskan Husky Puppy -- How To Potty Train A Puppy
The most important aspect to having a good relationship with your new alaskan husky puppy is to properly housetrain him. For those of you that have small puppies that will be small dogs, paper training might be a good method. For the larger dogs, like the alaskans, going outside is the only option. In order to begin housetraining a feeding and walking schedule is necessary so that the dog will have plenty of opportunity to succeed.
Some of the basic rules for potty training:
1. Never have an unlimited amount of water available for your puppy.
If you allow your puppy to drink freely when he want it will be hard for you to gauge when its time for him to go. Controling when you allow him to drink water assures you a timeframe of when he will be interested in urinating.
2. Only feed your puppy during feeding times scheduled. Do not stray.
The same principle as water applies to the food. If the dog has not finished eaten his food, do not worry. Take the bowl off the floor and offer it at another time of the day scheduled for feeding.
3. Allow the puppy to go outside after he has eaten, awakened, or after play.
Generally after ten minutes from eating, waking up, or settling down after play, your puppy will start looking for a place to go. If your puppy is sniffing on the floor looking around is a sign that he might be ready to go. Take him outside before an accident occurs. If your puppy does go outside, praise him and give him a treat. Good behavior is always encouraged.
4. Do not allow the puppy to roam around your house unsupervised.
Until your puppy can go outside frequently and is a little bit older, I would recomment lead training him. By attaching a lead, you can control your puppy easier than having to chase him around the house. Make sure you are with you puppy when using this method. If you cannot be around then crate training is recommended.
Following these basic rules you should have your puppy trained in no time. Then you will both be happy.
